Paul LaPorte
Foreword by Fr. Edwin Thome

Paul LaPorte retired in 2004, after nearly forty years in the computer software business. In 1990, he opened his own company, Mission Communications, to write for and with technology-based companies around the world.

He earned an undergraduate degree in English from the University of Michigan. He took nearly two years off from his watercolor painting avocation to write The Heart of a Priest. Paul and his wife, Carol, previously published Life in the North Lane, a popular guide to living and working in northern Michigan.

They live in and travel from Traverse City, Michigan. They have two grown children and six grandchildren.

Fr. Edwin Thome, at 82, was described by The Traverse City Record-Eagle as “Forever Priest.” He knew Father Fred from his early seminary days in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

They share more than a common given name of Edwin. Each of them stepped out of the stereotypical understanding of a priest to assist the disadvantaged. Fr. Thome has reached out to the deaf and the migrant population while serving as a parish priest. He has served as pastor, vicar, Superintendant of the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools for twelve years, and as Vicar General for the Diocese of Gaylord for four years under Bishop Patrick Cooney.

When Fr. Fred died, he was the perfect fit to step into The Father Fred Foundation as Spiritual Director and sit behind the desk of his senior priest-mentor and friend.

He currently serves as pastor at St. Joseph Parish on the Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City, where Fr. Fred also once served.
